From labor and delivery nurse to doula

How is being a nurse different from being a doula? Carolyn and her guest Jennifer discuss their transitions from being a Registered Nurse during labor and delivery to serving as a doula. Jennifer also explains what she calls the “sales pitch” to women in labor.

"The medical system is run by insurance, and numbers, and money. So, a nurse has to chart and document on you according to the standards of care. They have all of that responsibility where as a doula you get to go in there and be the person that person needs you to be."

Jennifer Steinke is an experienced Registered Nurse and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. Her compassionate approach is to help mothers navigate the challenges and joys of feeding and caring for their little ones. In her pursuit of knowledge, Jennifer included CranioSacral Therapy into her Lactation practice to aid in helping babies relax their bodies. CST releases restrictions that interfere with optimal function in the body, physical or emotional.   Jennifer has been helping moms and babies since 2008. Her hospital background and experience as a bedside nurse has helped her to easily transition into the role of a doula. In 2020 she completed Birth With Spirit Doula training that embraces the emotional and spiritual aspects to birth. CST aids mothers in staying physically and mentally relaxed while pregnant, during birth and postpartum. CST helps mothers smoothly transition though these profound changes with greater ease and confidence.   As a student of life, Jennifer enjoys working with other advanced therapist. She quickly became a teaching assistant through the Upledger Institute, which has helped her learn CST at a deeper level. Jennifer attends breastfeeding conferences to stay up-to-date on the current research and recommendations, which helps her to guide moms and babies.   Jennifer offers CranioSacral services to all ages.
